Reader’s Choice ’12: Where’s the Beef?

Many of you met Anna Petersen (aka Chef Nusy) earlier this year when she requested I add her selection to the Reader’s Choice 2011 list

When I asked what her choice for 2012 would be, she was ready. “Having kids eat healthier is a great thing,” she said. “But trying to do it in a one-size-fits-all manner has never, ever worked.”

Law school is on the horizon for this fencer-immigrant-chef-student. Anna’s lobbying skills combined with her determination and common sense promise to make her one excellent attorney.

  1. Thank you for running this again, Aimee, and thank you for including me in the Reader’s Choice! While school lunches in Hungary are not a thing better (in fact, it’s mostly unpalatable, sometimes straight-up revolting “food”), I hope that the “uniformity” doesn’t kill what has the potential to be a great system.

  2. Many moms across the country should be commended for standing up and speaking out about the changes to school meal plans this year! Thanks for your work and words Aimee!

    1. Thanks, Ryan. I agree. The new standards are a good start. I would like to see the USDA give local schools and parents more room to customize the standards in order to better address the needs of their students and communities. If parents and citizens agree with me, I hope they will speak out to their school boards, representatives and senators in Congress, and the USDA itself.
